Faculty Member of the Year

This award honors a faculty member who demonstrates high achievement in three areas: teaching; scholarship or creative work; and service (to the university and wider academy, culture, and public).  The award, accompanied by a $2,000 honorarium, is presented at the September Faculty Convocation. Nominations from all schools and all faculty ranks are welcome. 

General guidelines for the selection of the Faculty Member of the Year: 

1. Demonstrates excellence in the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service in the past year (May to April)

2. Advances the mission and values of ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago

3. Ineligibility

  • Previous recipients of the award
  • Faculty members who are retiring or leaving the University at the end of the academic year
  • Administrators who hold faculty rank

4. Process

  • Faculty can be nominated from February 1st to April 30th each year .
  • Following nomination, a member of Faculty Council Service and Communication Committee will inform the faculty member of their nomination and confirm their interest in submitting an application for consideration. At this time, the nominee will also share a ranked list of two ºÚÁÏÃÅfaculty members who can provide a Letter of Support.
  • A member of the Faculty Council Service and Communication Subcommittee will reach out to the first listed colleague for the Letter of Support, moving on to the second listed colleague if needed. The Letter of Support is due by May 15th  at 11:45pm. 
  • The nominee will be asked to submit a Personal Statement and CV by May 15th  at 11:45pm.
