Joel Blumenfeld

Joel E. Blumenfeld is Senior Counsel, Privacy & Data Security at AbbVie. Joel is responsible for providing strategic legal guidance to the organization regarding a wide range of privacy and data security issues, including those related to artificial intelligence (AI). In his role, Joel is the lead attorney for global data security and AI privacy matters, as well as for privacy matters related to therapeutics, aesthetics, and commercial operations in the United States.
From 2016 – 2024, Joel spearheaded the creation of the Global privacy office at Grainger where he most recently served as Assistant General Counsel, Privacy & Technology. In that role, Joel was the head of Privacy for the organization, overseeing global privacy operations in the US, Europe, UK, APAC, Canada, and LATAM. He was also the primary legal counsel for data security issues, AI, and other emerging technology issues.
Joel is also an adjunct professor at ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago School of Law, where he has taught Privacy and Security of Corporate Information since 2014. He is a recognized thought leader and speaker on privacy and technology topics and was named as a Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals in 2016.
