The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Marcel Fredericks, PhD, professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology, who passed away on April 7, 2025. 

Fredericks was dedicated member of the ºÚÁÏÃÅfaculty for more than 50 years, after receiving his BS, MA, and PhD from the University. In addition to being a professor of sociology at Loyola, he also served as the Director of the Office of Research in Medical Sociology.  

After earning his PhD from Loyola, Fredericks stayed on as a faculty member, becoming an assistant professor in 1965. He was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University from 1967-69 and became a full professor at ºÚÁÏÃÅin 1974.  

Colleagues remember Fredericks as a beloved teacher and mentor. He received a number of recognitions for his teaching, including a Master Teacher award in 1996 and an Outstanding Professor and Educator award from ºÚÁÏÃÅin 2006. The Department of Sociology’s scholarship in his name continues to support promising sociology majors in completing their degrees. 

A renowned medical sociologist, Fredericks focused his research on health care and the professionalization of physicians and dentists. Over his career, he published more than 100 academic articles and nearly three dozen books, monographs, and workbooks. His scholarly contributions gained international recognition, and he received an honorary degree from Czestochowa University in Poland in 2011. 

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 10, from 4 to 8 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory in Skokie, IL. The funeral will take place on Friday, April 11, beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Church of Ss. Peter and Lambert Catholic Parish in Skokie, IL.
