The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Daniel Holcomb Winship, MD, who served as Dean of Stritch School of Medicine from 1990-1999.
Dr. Winship had a distinguished fifty-plus year medical career. He cherished his chosen profession of medicine and the opportunity to teach and mentor medical students and young physicians. He was also passionate about medical ethics and its instruction throughout his career.
In 1990, Dr. Winship received the Exceptional Service Medal and Award from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in recognition of his many years as a clinician and administrative leader within the VA health system, including serving as Associate Deputy Chief Medical Director at the national VA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Following his tenure in D.C., he was Dean of Stritch School of Medicine through the decade of the 1990’s. Wanting to continue his clinical and teaching roles, he held a clinic at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital during his Deanship.
He was a lifetime Fellow in the American College of Physicians and served in voluntary leadership roles with multiple societies and associations, including the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He retired in 2010 from the American Medical Association after serving as Secretary to the Council on Medical Education and Assistant Secretary to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
In addition to being devoted to medicine, teaching, and mentorship, Dr. Winship appreciated all the joys life had to offer. He was a voracious reader and loved traveling, appreciating the opportunity for a road trip, to fly fish, or set foot on a sailboat. He was proud to have visited all 50 states.
