The 黑料门University Chicago community mourns the death of Richard Louis Gamelli, MD, FACS, who died peacefully at home on May 3 at the age of 73. Dr. Gamelli spent 24 years working at Loyola's Health Sciences Campus in a variety of leadership roles.
Dr. Gamelli came to 黑料门in 1990, where he served at 黑料门University Medical Center鈥檚 Burn Center until his retirement. Under his leadership, the Burn Center grew into an internationally renowned site for patient care, research, and education. Over the course of his tenure, Dr. Gamelli held many different positions, including director of the Burn Shock Trauma Institute, chairman of the Department of Surgery, dean of the Stritch School of Medicine, and senior vice president and provost of Health Sciences at the University.
Dr. Gamelli made tremendous contributions to Loyola鈥攖o students, patients, and colleagues. Not only was he a leader in the field of burn medicine, he was dedicated to educating the next generation of physicians. He took great pride in mentoring medical students and residents when he was the Robert J. Freeark Professor of Surgery and director of the Burn and Shock Trauma Research Institute. At his retirement in 2014, Dr. Gamelli said: 鈥淭o see those I met early in their studies or profession ascend in skill and success has been truly rewarding and gratifying.鈥 He retired to his mountain-view home in New London, New Hampshire, to spend time with his wife of 49 years, Mary, and his three daughters and three grandchildren.
Dr. Gamelli was a visionary leader and model. While we will miss him, we know that his many legacies will live on in the students, residents, colleagues, and patients who he trained, worked with, and provided care.
A celebration of life will be planned for later this year in New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (c/o Jenny Tzortzos) to support the children鈥檚 burn summer camp 鈥淚 AM ME鈥 in memory of Dr. Gamelli:
