The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Lucien T. Roy, Jr., who passed away on February 10. Lucien was the beloved husband of Barbara DeCoursey Roy, devoted father of John O’Neill Roy, (Angela), grandfather of Griffin DeCoursey Roy, dear brother of Martha King (Jerry), and a devoted uncle and brother-in-law.
Lucien’s impactful career in ministry and higher education included decades at Loyola, where he retired as vice president of mission and ministry in 2009. At Loyola, he is remembered for building a loving, inclusive, service-oriented community, and helping students find their calling through Evoke, a program he helped develop with a generous grant from The Lilly Endowment.
Lucien was an international champion for Lay Ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. In retirement, he worked as a consultant with The Reid Group, helping Catholic institutions and parishes successfully execute their missions. In his private life, he loved reading, enjoying nature, cuisine, and the theatre with his wife and family. He also enjoyed indulging in March Madness and supporting his beloved Bears, Billikens, and Fighting Irish through weather both fair and foul.
After a diagnosis of lymphoma in 2017, Lucien enrolled in a clinical trial for an experimental drug treatment. Through his careful diligence and the talent of a wonderful team of professionals, he was able not only to see his son married and hold his grandson, but to help pioneer a new treatment for others with his illness.
A memorial Mass for Lucien will be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 4 p.m. at the Ignatius House Chapel at the Lake Shore Campus. Burial services will be private. Instead of flowers, please consider a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Condolences can be sent to:
