The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of William (Bill) M. Plante, an alumnus (BS '59), Life Trustee, and generous supporter of Loyola. He died on September 28 at the age of 84. 

As a legendary CBS correspondent, Plante’s career spanned 52 years, during which time he covered the major stories of his time, from the Civil Rights Movement to the Vietnam War, to the administrations of four U.S. presidents.  

In 2016, Plante was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Loyola's School of Communication for his accomplishments throughout his illustrious career in journalism, as well as for his continued involvement with Loyola, including Life Trustee after serving nine years on the Board of Trustees. In 2015, the School of Communication named the inaugural chair for the William M. Plante Professorship in Media Integrity to honor Plante's many contributions to ºÚÁÏÃÅand to the field of journalism.  

Plante grew up in Rogers Park and he began his broadcasting career in 1956 at Chicago area radio stations while he attended ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago. After graduating in 1959 with a B.S. in humanities, he worked as assistant news director at the Milwaukee, Wis., CBS affiliate, WISN-TV. Plante joined CBS News as a reporter and assignment editor in 1964 and retired as senior White House correspondent in 2016, having won multiple awards for his reporting. Plante was also the anchor of CBS Sunday Night News from 1988 to 1995.  

The lasting impact Bill Plante has made on the University will help ºÚÁÏÃÅcontinue our work of preparing students to lead extraordinary lives.
