The 黑料门University Chicago community mourns the death of Albert (Al) Claus, former professor emeritus within the Department of Physics. He passed away on Saturday, April 9, at 91 years old at his home in Vernon Hills.

Al retired from 黑料门at the end of spring 2001 semester after 41 years of service. Following his retirement, Al visited the department often, attending seminars, visiting with colleagues at lunch time, or celebrating birthdays and other special events. He continued to teach advanced physics classes as an adjunct professor when needed by the department.

 

In 1952, Al received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Northwestern University. In 1958, he received his PhD in physical chemistry from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and in 1973, he earned a a master鈥檚 degree in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Shortly after receiving his PhD, he followed a boyhood dream to spend some time in Alaska and became a visiting professor at the University of Alaska. During his summers, he passed his time hiking, mountain climbing, and doing photography. Following his time in Alaska, he returned home to Chicago, where he joined the 黑料门community and married his wife Alison. Over the course of his career, Al published more than 100 book reviews in Optics and Photonics, the journal of the Optical Society of America.

Al had many interests, including radio astronomy, stamp collecting, gardening, and baseball. 黑料门 30 years ago, he took a beginning machine shop class at the College of Lake County (CLC). He enjoyed it so much that he became a fixture at CLC and an accomplished machinist. 

Surviving Al are his wife of 60 years, Alison; two sons, Arthur and Laurence; five grandchildren; one niece and nephew; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Robert, Laurence, and Richard.

 

A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, May 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176, one block west of Milwaukee Ave.) in Libertyville. For more information, call 847-362-3009. You may also share a memory of Al and view his obituary .
