The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Mark McIntosh, PhD, professor in the Department of Theology within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), who passed away on October 13 after enduring a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with courage and grace.

Dr. McIntosh began teaching at ºÚÁÏÃÅin 1993. From 2009 to 2014, he served as the Van Mildert Professor of Divinity at Durham University in the United Kingdom. In 2014, he returned to ºÚÁÏÃÅas the inaugural holder of Loyola’s endowed chair of Christian spirituality. An ordained Episcopal priest, Dr. McIntosh was inspired by the care at ºÚÁÏÃÅfor the principles of Ignatian pedagogy. He firmly believed that Loyola’s intention to elicit students’ own deep sense of what they most profoundly desire to learn is crucial to their growing self-awareness and maturation towards their best selves.

In March 2021, Dr. McIntosh published The Divine Ideas Tradition in Christian Mystical Theology, which analyzes the divine ideas tradition and suggests how divine ideas may inform Christian theology today. You can learn more about his recent work and his legacy at ºÚÁÏÃÅhere.

 

A memorial service for Dr. McIntosh will be will be held on Saturday, November 20 at 9 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Evanston, IL. More details can be found . The McIntosh family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, friends and colleagues may direct gifts in memory of Dr. McIntosh to the Mark A. McIntosh Scholarship in the Humanities in CAS. Dr. McIntosh's passing is a tremendous loss for the Department of Theology, CAS, and the University. He was a tremendous scholar, teacher, colleague, and friend who will be greatly missed. Please keep Dr. McIntosh, his family, and all those whose lives he touched in your thoughts and prayers.
