The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of James (Jim) T. Harrington, Jr., senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 29 from injuries sustained in a fall at home.
Jim is fondly remembered by colleagues and students in the philosophy department at Loyola, where he taught since 2006 and where he served for a time as director of undergraduate programs. He also served as a member and chair of the Academic Council of the College of Arts and Sciences. Jim had particular research interests in the philosophy of physics, the philosophy of time, and the history of analytic philosophy. He published a book, Time: A Philosophical Introduction, in 2015, and his work has appeared in journals such as Studies in the History and Philosophy of Modern Physics, Southern Journal of Philosophy, and American Philosophical Quarterly.
He received a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Illinois Chicago for his dissertation, Local Time: Foundational Studies for a Theory of Relativistic Temporality. Prior to attending graduate school, he received a Bachelors of Arts in the program of liberal studies and a Bachelor's of Science in physics from the University of Notre Dame.
Jim was born June 2, 1967 in South Bend, Indiana, as the beloved son of James and Roseanne Harrington; devoted brother of Maris Harrington Tallentire; and loving uncle to his nieces and nephews: Emme Zajdela, Matthias Zajdela, Timothy Zajdela, and Sophie Zajdela. He was preceded in death by his sister, Roseanne E. Harrington; uncle, Frank Strupeck; and grandparents, John and Rita Harrington and Frank and Louise Strupeck. His family is grateful for the compassionate care he received at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL and for the kindness of the care team.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 13 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church (1077 Tower Road, Winnetka, IL), with visitation starting at 10 a.m. A memorial fund will be established in Jim’s name in the Department of Philosophy.
