The 黑料门University Chicago community mourns the death of John Francis Shea, MD, Professor Emeritus of the Stritch School of Medicine. 

Dr. Shea, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at his Burlington, Wisconsin, home on February 19, 2020.He was born in Peoria, Illinois, on July 13, 1941. Dr. Shea and Patricia Ann Moeckel were married December 7, 1984 in Kauai, Hawaiiand resided in Riverside, Illinois.  

In 1982, Dr. Shea began his career at Stritch as an associate professor of neurological surgerywith joint appointments in the departments of neurobiology, cell biology, and anatomy. During his more than 30-year tenure, Dr. Shea was named 鈥淭eacher of the Year鈥 on four separate occasions, 鈥淥utstanding Clinical Professor,鈥 鈥淢ost Remembered Professor,鈥 and received the Golden Apple Award from Loyola鈥檚 alumni association, as well as the medical school鈥檚 highest accolade: the prestigious 鈥淢aster Teacher鈥 award. He also was the recipient of the 2003 Stritch Medal. A nationally recognized expert in acute management of neurotrauma and Dr. Shea built the most renowned spine practice in the Midwest.  His colleagues and students remember him as a brilliant teacher, with an addictive sense of humor that created an eagerness for his mentorship.  To describe all that Dr. Shea has contributed over his career is immeasurable, just as the number of lives he touched. 

Shea will be dearly missed by his family, friends, former students, and colleagues.
