The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Robert A. Morgan, PhD, senior lecturer in the Department of Biology. He passed away on Sunday, December 3.

Robert held a lifelong interest in birds. He was a scientific officer for the British Trust for Ornithology for 13 years and served in a similar role in the British Antarctic Survey. There he assisted in albatross research projects at Bird Island, South Georgia, in the far south Atlantic Ocean and directed the mapping and counting of large penguin colonies on remote sub-Antarctic islands. He also lectured extensively at conferences and bird clubs throughout Britain.

In 1984, Robert joined the biology faculty as a lecturer and taught general biology, human anatomy and physiology, and ornithology.

Since 2002, during the May to September breeding season, Robert monitored the distribution of nests and nest success of the state endangered population of Swainson’s hawks in Kane and McHenry counties in Illinois. In 2005, he cofounded the Illinois Swainson’s Hawk Project to organize field workers to search over a wider area of Illinois for nesting hawks. Of the two known remaining sites, the most productive has reared one to three young each year.

Robert also published 40 papers throughout his career and participated in major conferences including a recent data presentation on Swainson’s hawks at the 2017 Wild Things Conference. He was nominated for a 2007 Grassroots Conservation Leadership Award by the Chicago Audubon Society for his efforts in this research.

Colleagues described him as indefatigable in his devotion to students and unparalleled in his work ethic and commitment to the Department of Biology.
