The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Gregory Matz, MD, a faculty member and former department chair in the Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Matz was recently named professor emeritus on July 1.

Dr. Matz began his career at Stritch in 1975 as a clinical associate professor. In 1983 he was appointed professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology, a role he held until stepping down in 2001. He remained a professor full time and was a practicing head and neck cancer specialist until his retirement in June. Dr. Matz was a beloved ºÚÁÏÃÅphysician and teacher who frequently mentored students as an instructor in the Patient Centered Medicine sequence.

Dr. Matz served on several committees during his tenure including Stritch’s Admissions Committee from 1984 to 2017 and Medical Council and was also on the Advisory Committee for the Parmly Hearing Research Institute. His passion for his patients intersected with a personal interest; he was a military history enthusiast and collected personal histories of Air Force veterans he met while working at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital.
