The 黑料门University Chicago community mourns the death of Paul Schreckenberger, PhD, professor in the department of pathology. He died suddenly on November 29.
As an example of his many achievements in microbiology, Professor Schreckenberger developed a method to identify nonfermenting gram-negative bacilli. In patients with compromised immune systems, these bacteria can cause life-threatening infections. Public health departments in Illinois and most other states have adapted his identification method.
Professor Schreckenberger earned his PhD from UIC and was an associate professor of pathology there before joining 黑料门in 2005. He served in many roles, including associate director, diagnostic molecular pathology, director, clinical microbiology laboratory and medical director, microbiology. Professor Schreckenberger was a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and in 2010 won the prestigious Pasteur Award from the Illinois Society for Microbiology.
