The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago community mourns the death of Dennis D. Martin, PhD, associate professor and assistant chair in the Department of Theology. Dennis passed away suddenly on October 25.

Dennis joined the Department of Theology as a faculty member in 1991. Before joining Loyola, he was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Tübingen in Tübingen, Germany and taught at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. Dennis’s main research focus was medieval monastic history and spirituality with secondary interests in the Protestant Reformation, particularly the Anabaptist and Mennonite traditions, and contemporary Catholicism. He was a published scholar, having written and edited numerous essays, two denominational encyclopedias, and two books, Fifteenth-Century Carthusian Reform and Carthusian Spirituality. Dennis served generously as the department’s assistant chair, a role he took on in 2008, and taught thousands of students during his 24-year tenure at the University.
