Arrupe Faculty Present on Empowering Future Nurses at AAC&U CLASS

Arrupe College faculty members, Robert Gutierrez, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor, Psychology and Aubrey Sirman, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Environmental Sciences, offered a presentation at the inaugural AAC&U Conference on Learning and Student Success, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 3.

The presentation, titled "Empowering Future Nurses at Arrupe College," describes the exploration and findings considered to develop Arrupe's Pre-nursing pathway.

The abstract for their presentation was as follows:

"Arrupe College of ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago provides students who are traditionally underserved by higher education with the opportunity to earn an associate's degree with little or no debt. The Pre-nursing pathway was created in 2019 to allow interested students to begin their nursing coursework while attending Arrupe with the goal of transferring to the university’s Bachelor of Nursing program upon completion of their associates. This poster details the development and implementation of the Pre-nursing pathway program. We present detailed analysis of academic performance and retention metrics regarding program success and the results of a survey of Pre-nursing pathway students conducted in 2024 and reflect on reflect on the successes and challenges of the pathway’s first 5 years necessary to make higher education more accessible and achievable for students."
