September 25, 2024
The ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities, inducted 142 new members on September 22, including 49 juniors, 41 seniors, and 52 graduate and professional students from the 11 schools and the Institute of Pastoral Studies. In order to receive an invitation to Alpha Sigma Nu, students must be juniors or seniors, or have completed half of their graduate/professional degree requirements, and be in the top 15% of their class. Only 5% of each class may be inducted each year. The three tenets of Alpha Sigma Nu are Scholarship, Loyalty, and Service. Candidates are nominated and recommended by their respective college, school, or institute, and recommendations are not only based on students' academic achievements, but also on their loyalty to the ideals of Jesuit education and their engagement in service.
This year, the ºÚÁÏÃÅChicago chapter also recognized three individuals with honorary membership: Christine Curran, Executive Director of the Ignatian Spirituality Project (Chicago, IL); Stephen Watson, Director of Athletics at ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago; and Douglas W. Woods, PhD, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at ºÚÁÏÃÅUniversity Chicago. Woods delivered the ceremony's keynote address, welcoming new members to the honor society and sharing how the society's tenets of scholarship, loyalty, and service are interconnected.
In addition to welcoming its new members, the ºÚÁÏÃÅChicago chapter awarded the annual Alpha Sigma Nu Scholarship to Nicolas Giner Calero of the College of Arts and Sciences. Finally, the Rev. Ronald J. Ferguson, S.J. Award for Most Outstanding New Inductee, sponsored by Loyola's Jesuit Community, was awarded to Ryan Johnson of the School of Education.
